Motorcycle Dealership Sues North Hampton, New Hampshire, Over Noise
The New Hampshire Union Leader (8/4, Kimble) reported, "Seacoast motorcycle dealership has filed a lawsuit against the town of North Hampton, claiming an ordinance attempting to regulate noise levels from motorcycles would essentially drive down business and prevent buyers from riding off from the dealer's parking lot. North Hampton adopted the noise ordinance after its passage on this year's town warrant." The lawsuit also claims "that the town ordinance essentially makes the majority of the dealership's used motorcycle inventory illegal." While the law "doesn't specifically mention quelling motorcycle noise, but the lawsuit contends that North Hampton's ordinance was created to make the noise level lower than what is allowed by state law -- 106 decibels."
New Senior Citizen Tax Break Will "Create Mountains of Paperwork
The Chicago Daily Herald (8/4, Lester) reported, "Suburban township assessors and senior advocacy groups say one component of new tax legislation will not only hurt property owners most in need of relief, but also create mountains of paperwork and unnecessary headaches for agencies dealing most closely with them. The legislation signed Sunday by Gov. Pat Quinn extending the annual seven percent cap on property tax growth in Cook County features one caveat - beginning next fall, senior-citizen home owners living in Cook County will have to reapply for annual tax breaks each year." But Dan Patlak, Wheeling Township Assessor, said the change will "put more of a burden on seniors, and more of a burden on the government to have to reissue these exemptions for people we know are deserving." He added that "a number of seniors rightfully entitled to an exemption won't remember to apply each year."
Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, Passes Litter Ordinance.
WBRC-TV Tuscaloosa, AL (8/4) reported, "The Tuscaloosa County Commission has passed an ordinance giving itself limited home rule over litter. The new ordinance allows the commission to fine people living in unincorporated parts of Tuscaloosa County who have litter. Commissioners say an accumulation of junk creates a public nuisance." The ordinance caused some controversy, as Tuscaloosa County Commissioner Gary Youngblood said, "I don't need any more bull to listen to. I've got plenty of garbage and trash and stuff that I've held onto. I know that I have to do better but, I can tell you this, if you live in Holt and Cottondale and somebody's got a junkyard in their front yard, that's a problem." Additionally, "Commissioner Don Wallace said the ordinance goes into effect immediately. Residents can be fines $150 per day, up to a total of $5,000."
