McHenry County, Illinois, Hopes To Balance Budget.
The Northwest Herald (8/4, Craver) reported, "County government has two $3 million budgetary hurdles to clear in the coming months. Its current 2010 budget is more than $3.1 million in the red as of June 30, due in large part to late payments from the state. And early budget estimates indicate that McHenry County could face a $3 million shortfall in 2011, as well. County staff are pledging to balance the books, as they have in previous years. The county's fiscal year ends Nov. 30." The herald notes that 2011 will be an "equal challenge" for county officials as Associate County Administrator for Finance Ralph Sarbaugh "projected that 2011 expenses will be $85.4 million, an increase of $2.3 million. Revenues, on the other hand, are projected to decrease $727,320 to $82.4 million."
Southampton County, Virginia, Denies Pay Raise For Employees
The Tidewater News (VA) (8/4, Passut) reported, "Southampton County employees for a second year will go without a pay increase. A list of salaries for county workers was distributed to the Board of Supervisors at a recent meeting. According to both the county's budget and the school division's central office, Southampton County Public Schools Superintendent Charles Turner will receive $128,544, which is county government's highest salary for the 2010-11 fiscal year. Turner was paid the same last year." The article noted that "Commonwealth's Attorney Eric Cooke is paid $115,660, Circuit Court Clerk Rick Francis $104,319 and Sheriff Vernie Francis Jr. $99,093" and "Southampton County Administrator Mike Johnson, who is not an elected official, is paid $97,391." "Usually your highest paid official in most localities is your superintendent of schools," said Isle of Wight Board of Supervisors Chairman Phillip Bradshaw. "You would usually then get into the constitutional officers. The state sets the pay scale."
