The concern over protecting the drinking water caused State environmental officials to order drillers working in the growing Marcellus Shale development areas to stop taking waste water from their operations to 15 treatments by May 19.

This actions, taken by acting Environmental Protection Secretary Michael Krancer occurred on the same day that the Marcellus Shale Coalition, a trade industry group acknowledged, for the first time that waste water, after it was treated and released into streams and rivers were partly responsible for higher levels of pollution.
In a statement issues by the DEP,, it was found that higer levels of bromide were found in rivers in Western Pennsylvania where much of the current Marcellus drilling is occurring. Bromide is a non-toxic sale that, when it interacts and cobines with disinfectants used in many municipal treatment plans creates a toxic brew known as "Total Trihalometnanes, or, THM's. TMS's have been shown to increase birth defects and some kinds of cancer, with ingestion or exposure.
The industry, through a spokes person for Range Resources commented that, "one of the criticism of the Marcellus indistry is that we aren't thinking long term." It is not known yet what the industry or State plan to do with the waste water.
