There are 23 different committees in the House, however, there are seven committees which will consider the most important and policy matters in the next two years. They will receive the most of attention in the 112th Congress and are the ones you should keep your eyes on.

U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce http://energycommerce.house.gov Responsible for technology, telecommunications, consumer protection, food and drug safety, pharmaceutical / life sciences policy, public health, air quality and environmental health, the supply and delivery of energy, and interstate and foreign commerce in general.
U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means http://waysandmeans.house.gov Oversight on all taxation, trade, tariffs and other revenue-raising measures, as well as a number of other programs including: Social Security, Unemployment benefits, Medicare
U.S. House Committee on the Budget http://budget.house.gov Responsibilities include oversight of the federal budget process, setting fiscal year budget caps, reviewing all bills and resolutions on the budget, and monitoring agencies and programs funded outside of the budgetary process.
U.S. House Committee on Financial Services http://financialservices.house.gov/Default.aspx Oversight includes insurance and housing matters, financial institutions, capital markets, domestic monetary policy, international monetary policy, and oversight and investigations.
U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform http://oversight.house.gov This committe has versight of virtually everything government does including the government procurement process, all regulatory agencies, national security, homeland security grants, federal workforce policies, regulatory reform, reorganization authority, information technology procurements.
U.S. House Committee on Appropriations http://appropriations.house.gov Weilds the power of the purse and is in charge of setting the specific expenditures of money by the government of the United States.
U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs http://foreignaffairs.house.gov Responsible for foreign assistance, national security developments affecting foreign policy; strategic planning and agreements; war powers, treaties, executive agreements, and the deployment and use of United States Armed Forces; peacekeeping, peace enforcement, and enforcement of United Nations or other international sanctions; arms control and disarmament issues; the United States Agency for International Development.
