Recent research and monitoring data is changing our understanding of green roof hydrology. In particular, it is increasingly clear that green roofs should be interpreted as thin groundwater systems, as opposed to elevated ground landscapes. This realization has implications for how we design green roofs and how they should be incorporated into stormwater runoff management programs. It is also apparent that the scale of a green roof really does matter. Greater benefit will be achieved when roofs with large areas are greened. An appreciation for the variables that control green roof performance will enable the development of thinner and lighter assemblies. This will be critical if the hope is to purposefully retrofit large numbers of existing buildings and modify the hydrology of our urban centers. This presentation briefly covers the promise of green roofs and points out the limitations of our current knowledge.
