HARRISBURG- Dec. 1- In an age when computer technology is driving job creation and learning, students in the Harrisburg School District are left behind. The school district’s 7,000 students only have access to 984 computers, all of them are outdated. Unfortunately, budget cuts at Harrisburg SD make it a struggle to purchase new or refurbished computers. It is time for a change!
Kelly Lewis, President and CEO of TechQuest Pennsylvania, the non-profit trade group for the technology industry in Pennsylvania, said the lack of modern computers put Harrisburg SD students at a disadvantage.
“Without access to current technology, these students are behind the digital divide and missing the opportunity to develop learning skills that would advance their educational pursuits and career pathways,” Lewis said. Lewis said TechQuest reached out to their partner technology companies to seek funding, new and refurbished computers and new computer software for the students. They have received a generous corporate investment from Reclamere Corporation in the form of reduced delivery price on refurbished computers. The corporation is presently obtaining computers from companies and governments that are only one to three years old. The company will clean and secure the hard drives, refurbish and deliver a minimum of 50 refurbished computers per month for Harrisburg SD.
“This surpasses the 984 goal in 20 months or less. The 50 computers per month permits Harrisburg’s IT staff to accommodate the integration in-house,” Lewis said. “To help advance this Project, Reclamere will deliver these TechQuest 4 Kids computers. This totals a donation of more than $50,000 to the students of Harrisburg SD.”
Lewis said he is grateful for Reclamere’s generous support and donations. However, they still need additional help to complete the “Computer Refresh” project in a timely fashion. TechQuest Pennsylvania is seeking a minimum of $200,000 to help Harrisburg students get access to advanced technology. .
As a token of gratitude, each contributing company will be recognized with a label placed on each computer prominently acknowledging their contribution.
“We need to invest in our children. We need to invest in our future,” Lewis said.
